Sparrow's Rationale 1704
This book was in a bit of sorry state when it came to me. The leather on the back was still attached, but that on the front board was present, but detached and the spine leather was missing entirely. Thankfully the boards were still attached and the original endbands in place.
First things first, I repaired the original endbands. Then the original leather on the back board was partially lifted, the book was rebacked with new hand-dyed calf skin, this was also run over the whole of the front board. Internally the joints were strengthened with Japanese tissue. The original leather from the front board was consolidated around the edges with Klucel G and then refixed to the front board. The spine was finished off with the addition of a new red and gilt patch label.
