Officium Hebdomadae Sanctae
This early eighteenth century Holy Week office book, came to me in quite a sorry state. The boards were detached, the spine was decayed and the original black gilt Morocco on both the boards and the spine had been covered with an adhesive-backed cloth, that was obscuring the tooling and accelerating the leather's decay.
It was found that the adhesive on the cloth had decayed sufficiently for the cloth to be removed mechanically without damaging the original leather. The leather was then consolidated using Klucel G. Given the state of the leather on the boards, it was decided that a conservation repair would be most appropriate and the boards were rehinged and attached using Japanese tissue and the very powdering spine leather removed, the spine cleaned and whole spine given a toned Japanese tissue covering.
