Daily Devotions 1758
This is a very interesting and rare book, a block book with images of the mass for use by Recusant Catholics in 18th century England. The simple calf binding had no decoration was made from patched leather and the material was very delicate and beyond repair. The leather on the spine had disappeared entirely. The block of the book was sound and was still functioning well.
Given the great rarity of the volume, a decision was taken to discard the old leather and recover the book in new hand-dyed calf. New endbands were tied. The new leather was untooled and undecorated like the original. The joints were strengthened with Japanese tissue. The final result was simple and pleasing and true to the original.
