Handling rare books is a great joy and privilege and at the Martlet we have conserved books that date from the earliest years of printing right through to the early twentieth century. We believe that a book's binding is not simply a means of protecting a text, but has a great cultural and artistic value in its own right. A binding is part of a book's history and when faced with a challenging project, we aim to conserve and retain as much of an original binding as possible. If that is not possible, we then rebind books in period styles using traditional techniques. We have extremely high standards and always use conservation grade materials in our work. On the following pages you will find some case studies of books we have recently conserved in our studio, each with a detailed description of the approaches and methods used in their repair. If you would like to consider having a book conserved by us, please do get in touch and we will be delighted to help if we can.
