This is a delightful little French Alamanach dating from 1794. It is bound in paper wrappers made from hand blocked Dominotes paper. When it came to us it was very tired, the front and back covers were fragile and the paper had been lost from the spine.
The treatment began by dismantling the failing sewing and then repairing and flattening the paper. The quires were guarded with Japanese tissue and then the book was resewn in the original manner. The paper wrapper was separated from the printer's waste lining, washed, flattened and resized with Methyl Cellulose to give it more integrity. Lastly the missing spine area was filled in with matching handmade laid paper, the liners were once more pasted back into place and the paper wrapper was pasted back on to the book.
