Victorian Sketch Books
We were delighted to be asked to undertake the conservation of these two early Victorian sketch books, that were gradually disintegrating. They were still in their original cloth and marbled paper boards, but the binding of both was compromised, which in time would have endangered the contents.
In this case it was judged that protecting the contents of the sketch books was a priority over conserving the binding. The books were therefore dismantled, pages guarded were Japanese tissue where needed and then the blocks were resewn on to tapes. Both books were given uniform new case bindings that reflected something of the spirit of the originals, quarter black cloth with marbled sides.
