We have just put up a couple of new handmade pocket books for sale in our web shop. They are made of vegetable tanned leather, which we have dyed with a rich Mahogany dye which we make out of Walnut shells. The leather has been hand tooled in a pattern reminiscent of late medieval Gothic bindings. Nothing is made by machine and every element of the decoration requires a hot tool to be placed by eye and pressed into the dark brown leather again and again. If you want to see how it's done have a look at the video below. A lot of time, care and attention goes into producing these books, but they are items that are beautiful and made to last.
Have you seen our miniature books. They measure 65 by 40 mm, but every element is made by hand. The block of the book is made from a good quality laid paper, which is cut and folded into quires and then sewn together using Irish linen thread to make 28 mini pages. We cut the boards and cover the books in a combination of library buckram and decorated paper. In this case the paper is a hand blocked Italian paper made in Florence. They are wonderful on their own and you could write on them, but many of our customers like to hang them on the Christmas Tree and they make a fine Christmas decorations.
